Format based on Tool 7.1 from Examining What We Do to Improve Our Schools
(Harris, Edmonson, and Combs, 2010)
I love that you are going to hit this topic. Our cafeteria is crazy during lunch time and mind you we only have 1st and 2nd graders at our campus. We have paraprofessionals and our assistant principal who monitor the students. It's crazy to say the least and after lunch the students are expected to walk down the hallway to their classrooms. This turns into what seems to be the start line of a major marathon. We have screaming, running, jumping, crawling, sliding 1st and 2nd graders, They run down the hallway as if it is the running of the bulls.
ReplyDeleteBy the way what grade level are you targeting?
The focus will be the entire campus which is PK-4.
DeleteHi Santino! I like that your plan is very specific. I can clearly see the steps that you have laid out to take action on this topic. Some ideas I have about ideas for addressing cafeteria behavior are: rules that are posted in clear view througout the cafeteria, a color system (red/yellow/green) for letting such a large group of students know how they are doing noise level wise, a set seating chart if one hasn't already been established, maybe a table monitor for each class to look out for issues in the cafeteria and report back to the teacher and an incenive could be having a "Class of the Week" for best behavior in the cafeteria where the classes name is posted where everyone can see. This class could even be mentioned during the morning announcements. I think the bigger deal is made, the more likely others will want to work for this same recognition.
ReplyDeleteThis is elementary level right? Not sure any of these ideas except maybe expectations would be very helpful for middle or high school. :)
Goodluck with this! I know that cafeteria time is a struggle at many schools and I hope that you find a way to make it more enjoyable at yours!
